About Us
'Cinema will only become art when its materials are as cheap as a pencil and paper' -Jean Cocteau

Our aim is to provoke and inspire the local film community, while providing independent directors from NZ and around the world with an exciting vehicle for film promotion.

We think great cinema should not be constrained to the size of the film budget. We are interested in how creative and resourceful film-makers can be working within their given means, whatever that may be.

The digital age has revolutionised film-making, and new formats and ways of thinking are constantly emerging. So, we offer an alternative way of watching – Cinechico films  are viewed from café tables in an eclectic old style arcade, where books, drinks and take-away food is all welcome.

The Spanish phrase ‘cine chico’ literally means ‘little cinema’. The Cinechico Film Club is a not-for-profit collective based in Central Auckland. Richard Simkins and Matthew Northin now run the monthly show, which first began in 2005 in a Cuban bar on K’Road.

Cinechico was started by Everall Deans and Tim Flower in 2005 at Descarga Cubana Café. Running through 2005 and 2006, the small film night gained much interest and support, but sadly stopped when the doors shut on the little Cuban Café. Now back due to popular demand Cinechico has returned once again to Karagahape Road!

New Zealand is a small island in a big sea, but through global film culture we can stay connected!
